Back home

Great news yesterday when my mother-in-law, Mollie Watson, got home after a month in hospital. She is already a month older than we ever thought she would be!

One person I have seen a lot of recently after an absence of a few years is Betty Lace. Unfortunately she suffered a stroke recently and has been in Newlands (ward 20) at the same time as Mollie.

Betty is the widow of former Boundary Harriers and Isle of Man Athletics Association Chairman, Dennis. At times, I had different approach to the sport to Dennis but I was recalling one of his greatest contributions with Betty last week when we were discussing the election. After he retired, Dennis used to follow every sitting of the House of Keys and Tynwald from the public gallery and was well known to all the members.

When plans were being drawn up for the building of the National Sports Centre all members were lobbied by Dennis, before and after sittings, to support the expenditure. We'll never know whether the plans would have been voted through relatively quickly without those arms being twisted but I have my doubts.

Get well  Betty and back home soon.
