Better man than me

This must be one of the oldest photos I have published. It is of my grandfather, Frank Crowe, being sworn into the House of Keys as a member for Michael in 1942. He continued to serve as one of two members in a rural area until his retirement from the House in 1956. He was succeeded by his nephew Norman Crowe who kept the seat in the Crowe family through to 1970 whereupon he was elected to the the Legislative Council.

I love following politics but am far too sensitive to try and follow my grandfather. I know that its a national pastime to criticise politicians (I do too sometimes) but I have respect for all 64 of the people who allowed their names to go on the ballot papers. I just hope that the new members take a long term view of how to run the economy. I tabled a question at the West Douglas requisition meeting (which was not chosen by the chairman) concerning the long term cost of the public sector pensions which was not mentioned in any of the manifestos. If only I had the courage of those 64 to put my views to the test.

Incidentally, I believe that Howard Quayle, who was yesterday elected as the member for Middle with a comfortable majority, started his farming and business career where the aforementioned Norman Crowe finished his. He bought farm land from "Uncle Norman" (as he was always known to me) which was later developed for housing.

Some of Norman's other former land remains undeveloped however including the Playing Fields next to the Methodist Church which he gifted to the village and where I spent much of my youth. You would never get away with pushing people on the roundabout until they fell off like we used to.

On the other side of the Playing Fields is a property that used to be known as the Railway Hotel which Frank Crowe acquired to prevent Kirk Michael from gaining a second public house - a favourite tale of mine told in younger days with a pint of bitter in one hand.

Drama indeed

"Drama indeed" is a line often used Manx Radio in the TT and  the station reported on plenty last night with an action packed election special producing quality reporting, gaffs and surprises.

Former Commonwealth Games 400 metre hurdler and veteran champion David Anderson defied the exit polls to retain his seat of Glenfaba.

Before that, Northern 10 Miles regular finisher and London Marathon marathon runner Eddie Teare retained the constituency of Ayre with a landslide win. There was another landslide win for Alf Cannan, brother of Northern AC's well known former Island Games athlete, Bernie, in Michael.

Later in the evening, Parish Walk finisher and London Marathon runner, David Cretney retained his South Douglas seat with the largest number of votes of any candidate in Douglas.

Two other Parish walkers retained their seats with contrasting margins. Tim Crookall had a narrow victory in Peel but Graham Cregeen romped to victory in Malew and Santon.

Less successful were three times Parish Walk entrant Quinton Gill, who lost his seat in Rushen, and June Kelly in Onchan who is a sister of Maureen Kelly of the IOMVAC.

Peter Karran, brother of former walking champion Mike, again topped the poll in the latter constituency but ten times Parish Walk entrant Adrian Earnshaw had to face being asked on live radio if it was a good result for him after he had lost his seat.

It was Allan Bell who, as Tourism and Leisure minister, delivered the National Sports Centre to the Isle of Man in 1991. He topped the poll in Ramsey to become the longest serving member of the keys and will surely now be chosen as Chief Minister to deliver leadership to the Isle of Man for the next five years.

Isle of Man posties to host?

Graham Young, who reported on the 50th Postmen in Uniform race in London, says that he hopes to revive the Isle of Man version of the event.

Paul Nihill, the Olympic silver merdalist who took part in the London event, raced in 98 or 99 consecutive UK races without defeat and got up to 136 with only the one defeat.

Voted at 8.01 am

I always used to think it was silly that, until the last election, the polls only opened at 10 am. So I showed my support for the current system at 8.01 am.

And a reminder about the election takes precedence on the website today - people are still a war around the world to win the freedom to chose their leaders.

On a lighter note, I hope that nobody is looking for Michael George's name on the ballot paper. Six months after I ran the April Fool that he was standing I still hear about people who believe that he really is!

Drip feeding

Brilliant weather in the Isle of Man today. I intended to go for a walk this lunchtime to take advantage of it (I'm sure it will be a long enough winter) but I wanted to bring to an end all of the various features that I have been working on for the website. So I've been sweating in front of a computer instead and, sadly, complaining I'm too hot!

Regular visitors to the site will know that I like to drip feed stories and reports to gain maximum impact and thereby publicise each event as well as possible. Its also a fairer use of my time than trying to do everything at once.

But the suggestions for what I should be putting on the site have been running at record levels recently. I would like to feature more people in more events and have more photos from more places but that is just about it for those that have already happened.

Enjoy the feast whilst its there. Its back to drip feeding now but with five events coming up in 9 days starting on Saturday it looks like the drip will be hard to switch off.

Mother-in-law flat has taken priority

Getting ready for a home visit tomorrow. Also installing a new TV at home. Sneaked the (sad) Peel to Douglas walk feature update on earlier which is more than enough time for today even though the list remains.

Bring a friend

I'm just waiting for my home computer at the other end of a remote connection to reboot, and then I will be able to publish the first of the bits that I mentioned (as usual it has taken longer than planned).

Great news that Medis are to support the Island Cross Country league and I linked to the confirmed dates and venues in the IOMAA website this morning.

I'm now adding a photo of the Manx Cross Country team from 1990 which, although it has done the rounds a couple of times, is always a good one to look back on, Who do you know?

But then I ask the question. Are you doing enough to attract new runners to the cross country? I don't mean any committee members but everyone who enjoys the sport. Does your next door neighbour go jogging? Can you persuade someone to rejoin the league? Its up to you to make it a success.

5 events in next 12 days

I've given priority to the fixture list as I don't think people realise just how many events are on the horizon.

I've not finished with the End to End Walk yet, a few walkers will be highlighted on the front page, but I've moved the main  feature onto a separate page to give myself some space to work in.

For now, check out the fixture list, follow the links to the events, make sure you have your entry form in (if required) or contact the organisers if you can lend a hand. It makes everyone's like easier if these things are done without a panic at the last minute.

No reply

Its only a couple a weeks  ago that I wrote about the welcome break in the fixture list! But with so much happening on and off the Island since then it really is a struggle to deal with all the matters that people are contacting me about. As always, I will attempt to reply to telephone messages and emails but this is supposed to be a hobby.

Quite a few personal matters to deal with tonight before I started on the website but I've nevertheless working on a couple of extra features that will see the light of day at some point tomorrow - most likely in the evening.

A bit of tinkering earlier but that's about all that shows.

Lot's of people calling by - 572 visitors yesterday and 486 so far today.

Repetition

Still recovering from a marathon website production weekend in the same way that the walkers and officials are recovering from the Ramsey Bakery End to End Walk.

One advantage I had yesterday, with my aim to publish photos and video as soon as possible, was that I didn't stay out in the rain for very long. Thanks to all who did including Neil Wilson who took most of the photos at the finish.

We now have 1439 photos available on the photo website at  www.murraylambden.co.uk

To repeat what I have written on the photo website:

"Thanks to Neil Wilson for pooling his photos with mine and agreeing that profits should go to charity.

If ordering prints for delivery to the Isle of Man its best to select "UK" as country and "Isle of Man" as county rather than "Isle of Man as country - postage charged by Photobox (who do the printing) £2.30 instead of £4.50. You can order prints from other events at the same time without extra postage charges.

Until 2011, only small copies of the photos were published but now the full images are available to view in much greater detail.

Photos from 2002 until 2010 were original published on the www.fotopic.net website whose owners ceased to trade in 2010. The full size files of all photos have been republished here so that the historical record is not lost (although the data for the number of views etc has been)."

420 to go

I've uploaded around 120 photos from the End to End Walk but have now finished the first video.

So I have stopped the upload of the photos (around 440 more yet) to allow the video to upload faster.

I'm going down to the finish after that.

Real Buzz about running

I was out on my second long run in 7 day this morning when just before 15 miles I got a real buzz about my running - I had been stung by a bee!

As far as what I have been doing for the past hour, its self explanatory from the front page.

My main intention was to clear some space for my End to End Walk photos but I also transferred all the stuff I researched about the BUPA Great North Run from the blog to a new feature.

I've also searched through the Berlin Marathon entry list and found 10 entries from Manx residents. If I wasn't going to be out at the End to End Walk I would be following Ed Gumbley's progress as closely as Paul Radcliffe's. And there is the great Ethopian too - he says he is not looking for a time. We all say that when we want to take the pressure off.

Come on the Potters. Still 1-1 as I write with 15 minutes to spare.

Bethany nearly there

Bethany De Legh-Runciman is today on day 10 of an 11 day 345 mile ultra run in Ireland.

All of the stage times are published here:

There is a Wikipedia entry for the course here:

And here is the official website - a cool £2,000 entry fee!
