Friday September 3rd 2010 Sarnia Walking Club 3 kilometres road walk Les Amarreurs, Guernsey

A well supported pre Church to Church walk over 3 kilometres at Les Amarreurs on Friday evening was won by local Guernsey athlete Stuart Le Noury in 14.28, very closely followed by Guernsey`s Phil Lockwood who was given the same time. These two were not saving themselves for the 19.4 miles walk in two days time, unlike fellow Sarnia Walking Club member Jason Le Noury who strolled around in 6th place in 16.26.
Visiting Isle of Man walker Jock Waddington showed a good turn of speed to finish third in 14.50. Only a few months ago he won the Parish Walk in the Isle of Man over 85 miles.
Regular visitor Jim Ball from Steyning AC, who holds allcomers records in Guernsey over 5 kilometres and 10 miles, finished fourth in 14.56, ahead of long distance walker Sean Hands who clocked 15.14. Sean holds the record for the 85 miles Parish Walk in Isle of Man.
Simon Cox from the Isle of Man Veteran AC, in eighth place beat the Guernsey M60 allcomers best time set by Eric Horwill in 1995.
First woman to finish was Jane Rowlinson from Guernsey in a new personal best time of 20.24, closely followed by Carol Bates in 21 minutes. Regular visitor from Enfield, Bernie Hercock brought up the rear of the field in one of his first races since his health problems earlier in the year.

Website sandwich

My day has centred around eating recently so it is quite appropriate that I filled a website sandwich with an 11 hour day out.

The base  consisted of advertising tonight's meeting (I hope it went well) this morning - and clearing a few more emails.

The top went on just now when I cleared the front page. I've got stacks more emails about Guernsey but I will wait to see what PJ produces on the Manx Harriers site - he was back from Guernsey today. Besides I've got quite a few beers in the fridge that need to be used up before Saturday morning.

Watered down

For the second year we are staying in a beautiful apartment in Penzance that overlooks St Michael's Mount and is within walking distance of a hundred or so pubs or restaurants - make that 150 if you call walking distances the three of four miles to Newlyn and Mousehole.

So when it rained on Sunday we took comfort in our apartment for much of the day and when the heavens opened overnight I told myself not to let it spoil a break that we had struggled to make work due to things at home.

We decided to go to the Eden Project thinking that we could stay dry indoors. But we were absolutely drenched just walking from the entrance to the big domes with the displays. I started to think that maybe the view to St Michael's Mount was pretty pointless if it was cut off by mist and  I had run out of dry clothes to walk to the pub.

Thankfully the weather started to improve by the time we left the Eden Project and today has been splendid. We managed some coastal walking around Lamorna and went back to the former mining village of St Just.

Actually I have exaggerated the weather because even on Sunday we walked as far as Mousehole and last night, although because of my wet clothes I had to what the well known walking coach used to do and mix training shoes with smart trousers, we ate great fish in one of the few remaining fishing ports of Newlyn. As well as supporting the local fishing trade  I thought it was important to support the local brewers too!

But where I was trying to get to was to say that despite having more time than normal my website coverage continues to get watered down. I thought I would have a chance to clear some of my email backlog. Its useful to be able to deal with enquiries for our holiday properties when on our own holidays but the emails relating to athletics have gone unanswered for the past 48 hours.

We didn't need preaching about the environment at the Eden Project - we just prayed for sunshine.
